The History of the Honda V4 Part 5 from Southern Honda Powersports

More Performance for theV4 Engine for Suzuka and WSB

1994 RVF/RC45 Suzuka 8-Hours Endurance Race: T. Okada & S. Hikita
1994 RVF/RC45 Suzuka 8-Hours Endurance Race: T. Okada & S. Hikita
Every year, the top WGP riders fight it out in the Suzuka 8-Hour race, making it the toughest race in the world. The introduction of new Superbike regulations made it necessary to develop a new race-oriented machine with even higher potential, leading Honda to begin development of the RVF/RC45. Like the RC30, the RC45 was specially built to be a base machine for racing. Designed using the latest technology and lightweight materials developed on the RVF750 racer, the RC45's newly designed engine featured PGM-FI (programmable fuel injection) for improved throttle response. The cam gear drive was moved to the right side of the engine, making for a lighter and more compact engine that could be ideally located in the chassis. These modifications boosted the V4-engine's performance to a whole new level. Supersport riders were in awe of the bike, and when fitted with the dual injectors and other special parts, the RC45 became a formidable racing machine. The 1997 WSB championship and multiple victories at the Suzuka 8-Hour were only some of its many race wins.

In 1988, four years after the debut of the RC45, the bike was completely redesigned. The newly designed engine was based on the World Superbike power unit and featured PGM-FI and a larger displacement. This all-new engine was mounted in a lightweight new high-rigidity 'pivotless' frame. Loaded with advanced technology developed on Honda's racing RC45, this new VFR delivered a level of performance and comfort never before experienced in a supersport bike. Riders around the world loved it.

In 2002, the engine was further upgraded with Honda's revolutionary variable valve timing system VTEC. Featuring the latest in advanced Honda technology, the new bike was environmentally friendly, more comfortable than ever and featured advanced air management.

Whether blasting around the racetrack at high rpm, or cruising comfortably down the highway in the meat of the bike's torque band, the V4-powered VFR was the most sophisticated sports bike of its era. It was the VFR that firmly established the reputation of this unique line of machines. What began as a racing bike of the future in the NR500 became, with constant development, one of the greatest sports and racing machines in motorcycling history. The era may change, but the Force V4 remains the same.

Supercross Round #7 Dallas from Southern Honda Powersports

2013 Honda CRF450R dirtbike from Southern Honda in Chattanooga TN.
Barcia ripping a burm on a 2013 CRF450R

This week we at Southern Honda were hoping for some better results our of our factory Honda CRF riders. There seemed to be a bit of a dark cloud looming over the Honda paddock during the Dallas round that just couldn't be escaped. In the 250 Supercross class, Geico Honda teammate Will Hahn put in a strong ride on his 2013 CRF250R and easily advanced to the Main in 3rd place. Then came Heat 2. Honda rider Zach Bell pulled a holeshot on the field and jumped out to a convincing lead. Things were looking great until Zach jumped a triple and lost his footing on the peg. In one of the nastiest crashes this year here went flying head over feet and face down into the dirt. It didn't help that he wasn't moving afterward. It was a scary moment for sure.

Awesome photo by Steve Cox

Believe it or not the kid walked away and rode in the LCQ he pulled out a second place and advances to the main! Someone should call him Iron Man.

Here is a play by play of the main:

15 Lap 250 East Main Event – 9:34pm. It’s number 50 with the lead – Kyle Peters. And sadly, Marvin Musquin is involved in a crash in the first corner – and gets going again in dead last.

Dean Wilson has already made his move into the lead by the end of the first lap. Blake Wharton has moved into second. Peters third.

Lap 5 of this race – Dean Wilson has already stretched out a nice lead. Blake Wharton is four seconds back. Peters still third. Wil Hahn is fifth. Justin Hill sixth. Zach Bell eighth. Marvin Musquin up to 11th!

Now ten laps in – Dean Wilson is leading. He looks strong. Blake Wharton is second. Kyle Peters running a nice third. Next is Wil Hahn. He’s followed by Justin Hill. Gavin Faith is sixth. And Marvin Musquin has come all the way up to seventh!

At the finish, it’s Dean Wilson with the first win of the ‘East Coast’ series. Second place goes to Blake Wharton, and third is Wil Hahn.

So we team Honda took their first East Coast Lites podium placing him third in points. Awesome!

Trey Canard on his 2013 CRF450R

Now on to the 450 Supercross class. After a terrible start Trey Canard was only able to muster a 9th place finish on his 2013 CRF450R. Reed and Short faired better. Heat 2 was even more ugly with Justin Barcia missing out on the qualifying spot altogether and coming in 11th. He came back to easily win the LCQ but track position for the main was less than ideal.

The 450 Main started out with James Stewarts clutch crapping out and leaving his Yoshimura backed Suzuki RMZ450 not able to make it to the starting gate.

When the gate drops the Honda riders come on strong. Chad Reed broke his leg here last year so he was on a mission to shake his demons.

Chad Reed getting it done. He's as fast as ever.

Here is a play by play of the 450 Main:

20 Lap 450 Main Event – 10:04pm. The riders have done their ‘sight’ lap. Except for James Stewart. Unbelievable. James Stewart will not race this race. He’s on the start line – with no motorcycle. He’s telling the crowd his clutch broke – and he won’t be riding. Obviously, James is bummed. Strange, strange news … bike broken before the race even starts.

10:06 the gate drops. It’s Chad Reed entering the first corner in first, but it’s Ryan Villopoto leading as they exit the first corner. The running order – Villopoto, Reed, Millsaps, Dungey, Alessi.

Ryan Villopoto is trying to get away quickly. He’s stretching his lead. Meanwhile, there is a nice three-way battle for second – it’s Reed, Millsaps, and Dungey. Something is going to happen here …

Towards the end of lap four, Millsaps makes a move inside on a tight right hand corner to overtake Reedy.

Running order on lap five – RV, Millsaps, Reedy, Dungey, Brayton, Alessi, Goerke, Barcia, Short, Albertson, Tickle, Canard.

At the halfway point – ten laps in. Villopoto, Millsaps, Reed, Dungey, Brayton,

On lap 15, Ryan Dungey makes an inside move on Chad Reed to overtake Reed for third. The running order – Ryan Villopoto first, Davi Millsaps second, Ryan Dungey third, Chad Reed fourth, and Justin Brayton fifth. Justin Barcia and Trey Canard are sixth and seventh.

Ryan Villopoto has won this race! It’s the best he can do in trying to retain the number 1 plate. Second place is Davi Millsaps, who retains the 2013 series points lead. Right behind him in third place is Ryan Dungey. Fourth goes to Chad Reed.

So 4th, 6th and 7th isn't bad. Still some work to do but results are steady. Atlanta is right around the corner and we are expecting big things for this race at Southern Honda. By the way, if you are looking for a 2013 CRF450R, we have a few left. See the video below about it:

CHAD REEDS 2013 CRF450R
CHAD REEDS 2013 CRF450R

The last round of the 250 west championship is here and we at Southern Honda are as excited as ever. The Honda CRF's are running strong and placing well. Here is a play by play of the race:

Cole Seely is involved in a first lap tangle – he’s circulating at the back of the pack.

Up front – it’s Jason Anderson leading. Tomac and Roczen are giving chase … it’s Suzuki, Honda, KTM.

Lap five. Jason Anderson leading. Eli Tomac chasing. Ken Roczen just a little ways behind them. At the end of lap five, Tomac slips inside of Anderson on a right hander and takes over the lead. The running order – Tomac, Anderson, Roczen, and Malcolm Stewart.

Lap eight – Roczen squeezes past Anderson and into second position. Tomac still leading.

This race belongs to Eli Tomac – he wins. Ken Roczen finishes right behind him. Third is Jason Anderson. (Full results below.)

Eli says “It’s good going into the break. It was a great race, and an awesome track. San Diego has been good to me. We’ll come back sweet in Seattle.”

Ken Roczen says “I struggled the whole day. I don’t know why. I started catching Eli towards the end of the main event. It was a good race. It’s important to keep the red plate (as the series points leader) and have the lead by 17 points.”

Eli Tomac wins 250 Main in San Diego

450 20 lap Main Event – 10:01pm. It’s Davi Millsaps with the lead! Broc Tickle is second, Chad Reed is third. Then Justin Brayton and Justin Barcia.

At the end of lap three it’s … Millsaps out front … Reed has moved to second place … Barcia is third, Tickle is fourth, Brayton fifth. Then Dungey, Stewart, Goerke, Villopoto.

Chad Reed is going for it. He’s .6 seconds behind Milsaps. And Barcia is right behind him. Then Brayton, Stewart, Dungey, Villopoto … Canard is ninth …

Ten laps in – halfway point. Millsaps leads Reedy by less than a second. Then, in a tight right hander, Reed falls.

Now it’s Millsaps, the 2013 series points leader, leading over Barcia by 2 seconds. Reed remounts in 7th place.

Lap 13. Running order – Millsaps, Barcia, Brayton, Ryan Dungey, James Stewart, Ryan Villopoto, Chad Reed.

Davi Millsaps is riding strong. He’s headed towards his second victory of the season, and more importantly, extends his series points lead.

Lap 19 – Villopoto stalls in a right hand corner.

The 20 lap Main Event sees Davi Millsaps winning! Justin Barcia is second, and Ryan Dungey moves up to third! (Full results below.)
