Supercross Round #7 Dallas from Southern Honda Powersports

2013 Honda CRF450R dirtbike from Southern Honda in Chattanooga TN.
Barcia ripping a burm on a 2013 CRF450R

This week we at Southern Honda were hoping for some better results our of our factory Honda CRF riders. There seemed to be a bit of a dark cloud looming over the Honda paddock during the Dallas round that just couldn't be escaped. In the 250 Supercross class, Geico Honda teammate Will Hahn put in a strong ride on his 2013 CRF250R and easily advanced to the Main in 3rd place. Then came Heat 2. Honda rider Zach Bell pulled a holeshot on the field and jumped out to a convincing lead. Things were looking great until Zach jumped a triple and lost his footing on the peg. In one of the nastiest crashes this year here went flying head over feet and face down into the dirt. It didn't help that he wasn't moving afterward. It was a scary moment for sure.

Awesome photo by Steve Cox

Believe it or not the kid walked away and rode in the LCQ he pulled out a second place and advances to the main! Someone should call him Iron Man.

Here is a play by play of the main:

15 Lap 250 East Main Event – 9:34pm. It’s number 50 with the lead – Kyle Peters. And sadly, Marvin Musquin is involved in a crash in the first corner – and gets going again in dead last.

Dean Wilson has already made his move into the lead by the end of the first lap. Blake Wharton has moved into second. Peters third.

Lap 5 of this race – Dean Wilson has already stretched out a nice lead. Blake Wharton is four seconds back. Peters still third. Wil Hahn is fifth. Justin Hill sixth. Zach Bell eighth. Marvin Musquin up to 11th!

Now ten laps in – Dean Wilson is leading. He looks strong. Blake Wharton is second. Kyle Peters running a nice third. Next is Wil Hahn. He’s followed by Justin Hill. Gavin Faith is sixth. And Marvin Musquin has come all the way up to seventh!

At the finish, it’s Dean Wilson with the first win of the ‘East Coast’ series. Second place goes to Blake Wharton, and third is Wil Hahn.

So we team Honda took their first East Coast Lites podium placing him third in points. Awesome!

Trey Canard on his 2013 CRF450R

Now on to the 450 Supercross class. After a terrible start Trey Canard was only able to muster a 9th place finish on his 2013 CRF450R. Reed and Short faired better. Heat 2 was even more ugly with Justin Barcia missing out on the qualifying spot altogether and coming in 11th. He came back to easily win the LCQ but track position for the main was less than ideal.

The 450 Main started out with James Stewarts clutch crapping out and leaving his Yoshimura backed Suzuki RMZ450 not able to make it to the starting gate.

When the gate drops the Honda riders come on strong. Chad Reed broke his leg here last year so he was on a mission to shake his demons.

Chad Reed getting it done. He's as fast as ever.
Chad Reed getting it done. He's as fast as ever.
Here is a play by play of the 450 Main:

20 Lap 450 Main Event – 10:04pm. The riders have done their ‘sight’ lap. Except for James Stewart. Unbelievable. James Stewart will not race this race. He’s on the start line – with no motorcycle. He’s telling the crowd his clutch broke – and he won’t be riding. Obviously, James is bummed. Strange, strange news … bike broken before the race even starts.

Trey Canard trying hard on his CRF450R

10:06 the gate drops. It’s Chad Reed entering the first corner in first, but it’s Ryan Villopoto leading as they exit the first corner. The running order – Villopoto, Reed, Millsaps, Dungey, Alessi.

Ryan Villopoto is trying to get away quickly. He’s stretching his lead. Meanwhile, there is a nice three-way battle for second – it’s Reed, Millsaps, and Dungey. Something is going to happen here …

Towards the end of lap four, Millsaps makes a move inside on a tight right hand corner to overtake Reedy.

Running order on lap five – RV, Millsaps, Reedy, Dungey, Brayton, Alessi, Goerke, Barcia, Short, Albertson, Tickle, Canard.

At the halfway point – ten laps in. Villopoto, Millsaps, Reed, Dungey, Brayton,

On lap 15, Ryan Dungey makes an inside move on Chad Reed to overtake Reed for third. The running order – Ryan Villopoto first, Davi Millsaps second, Ryan Dungey third, Chad Reed fourth, and Justin Brayton fifth. Justin Barcia and Trey Canard are sixth and seventh.

Ryan Villopoto has won this race! It’s the best he can do in trying to retain the number 1 plate. Second place is Davi Millsaps, who retains the 2013 series points lead. Right behind him in third place is Ryan Dungey. Fourth goes to Chad Reed.

So 4th, 6th and 7th isn't bad. Still some work to do but results are steady. Atlanta is right around the corner and we are expecting big things for this race at Southern Honda. By the way, if you are looking for a 2013 CRF450R, we have a few left. See the video below about it:

Honda CTX700N and CTX700 on sale soon at Southern Honda Powersports

2014 Honda CTX700N and CTX700 on sale at Southern Honda Powersports Chattanooga.
2014 Honda CTX700N and CTX700 will be available soon from Southern Honda Powersports

We at Southern Honda Powersports were pleasantly surprised with the introduction of the Honda CTX700N and CTX700 models and we are really looking forward to hitting the roads around Chattanooga on this bike. Both options take on their own personality. The 2014 CTX700N exudes boulevard cruiser seating position but looks like a modern motorcycle. If you look at the lines on the bike you see an appealing shape that will look just as good downtown Chattanooga as it will downtown Atlanta. The seat height makes the bike VERY accessible to a wide variety of riders.

2014 Honda CTX700N ready to cruise Chattanooga.
2014 Honda CTX700N ready to cruise Chattanooga.

The brilliance of Honda engineering shines once again in the form of the 2014 CTX™700N. This is a bike specifically engineered to make motorcycling more approachable, affordable and fun than ever before. Thanks to a low seat height of only 28.3 inches, riders can quickly get acclimated to life in the saddle. Honda's acclaimed automatic Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) provides either a fully automatic mode or the option of more active gear selection via "paddle-shift" type buttons on the handlebar, and the DCT version also comes with an Antilock Braking System (ABS). The 670cc parallel-twin engine features cylinders canted 62 degrees forward for better weight distribution and a lower center of gravity for ease of handling.
This smooth-running fuel-injected engine pumps out loads of low-end and midrange torque to simplify launching from stops even with the optional six-speed manual gearbox, and there's enough power on tap for wherever the road may lead. Beneath the fuel tank cover, there's a handy glove box area, and the fuel is carried beneath. All in all, the CTX700N is an amazingly affordable, fun, friendly and comfortable bike that is perfect for everyday rides, weekend trips, two-up exploring or just about anything else you can dream up.
2014 CTX700N great for women riders as well as men. This is a true one size fits all bike!

The CTX700 is the next version in the CTX series sporting a full fairing in front of the rider. Some are screaming "DN-01" but if the NC700X and NC700X DCT are any indication, we are in for a MUCH better bike. The DN-01 never had a manual transmission available. It also did not have the DCT transmission. Some would say it was also ugly as sin. The CTX700 is a much better looking, much more modern interpretation of a low seat, feet forward, faired motorcycle. Hard bags are available as well for those that need extra storage. These are similar bags to the excellent setup on the NC700X.

Features & Benefits

- Sophisticated liquid-cooled SOHC eight-valve 670cc parallel-twin engine pumps out abundant torque in the low-end and midrange for easily accessible power.

- An impressively broad torque curve gives the CTX700N a linear and smooth power delivery.

- A relatively long engine stroke (80.0mm combined with a 73.0mm bore) and a high-inertia crankshaft are design elements that add to the CTX700N's extremely tractable power characteristics.

- The 62-degree forward lean given to the cylinder assembly facilitates near-vertical mounting of the single 36mm throttle body for superior intake port positioning and shaping. In addition, special shaping to the combustion chambers further enhance engine combustion efficiency for clean burning and optimal power production.

- An engine balancer shaft quells vibration for smooth, comfortable operation, and rubber-mounted footrests add to rider comfort.

- Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) continuously monitors numerous variables to ensure the correct fuel mixture for existing riding and atmospheric conditions, thereby delivering optimal performance and remarkably crisp throttle response over a wide range of operating conditions.

Two Model Options:

- CTX700ND with DCT/ABS features a second-generation automatic six-speed Honda Dual Clutch Transmission that uses two hydraulically controlled clutches to deliver quick and smooth gear changes in a choice of three modes: Manual (MT), which allows the rider to shift gears using buttons, and two automatic (AT) modes—S for sport riding and D for everyday use.

- DCT model also features and Antilock Braking System (ABS) to provide full antilock functionality for powerful and secure braking action.

- CTX700N features a manual six-speed transmission.

- Low seat height, along with the new Honda parallel-twin engine design, creates a very low center of gravity, making the CTX700N feel remarkably nimble and fun to ride.

- Fuel capacity of 3.17 gallons and great fuel economy give the CTX700N a long cruising range.

- A rigid and compact diamond-shape steel frame, low center of gravity and plush suspension help make the CTX700N responsive, agile and enjoyable to ride all day.

- Stout 41mm front fork provides 4.2 inches of travel, while the Pro-Link® rear suspension system delivers 4.3 inches of wheel travel.

- A remarkably low seat height of 28.3 inches helps instill rider confidence.

- Open, roomy ergonomics position the rider in a well-balanced seating position for all-day comfort and fun.

- A large array of available accessories allows owners to add just the right combination of capabilities to suit individual preferences and expand their adventures.

2013 Honda Gold Wing F6B on sale at Southern Honda in Chattanooga.

So it's finally time. We have been anxiously awaiting our first shipment of Honda Gold Wing F6B motorcycles here at Southern Honda Powersports. With 62lbs less weight, it is going to be a blast to hit the mountains around Chattanooga, Tennessee to get an idea of how agile the bike is. You can bet one thing, we are going to have the best and lowest price on a Goldwing F6B in Tenessee, Georgia, Alabama or anywhere in the southeast. We have had a lot of folks out of Atlanta asking us about the bikes as well and what mods will be available right off the bat. We have worked with RC Components for years so we will have their full line of wheels as soon as the bike launches.

2013 HONDA GOLDWING AND F6B CUSTOM WHEELS

We have had several questions about the new F6B that we can address here.
1. Will the 2013 Gold Wing F6B have reverse?  No, initially Honda will not offer reverse as an option. As the bike is 62lbs lighter and the weight is distributed much lower, the rider should not experience any kind of "tippy" feeling and since the seat is lower more riders will have feet planted on the ground.

2. Will the 2013 F6B have cruise control? Again, electronic cruise control will not currently be available for the F6B. We have been assured that there are several aftermarket solutions in the works. Also there are current solutions avaiable such as Thottlemeister which we already are a stocking dealer for. If you want cruise, we will make it happen.

3. Will the F6B windshield be adjustable? No it will not. Honda purposely made the windshield short and non-adjustable. As of right now this can't be changed. You can bolt on a taller windshield if need be.
4. Will Navigation be available on the Goldwing F6B? As of writing this it is not available but we are working in-house on a kit that utilized factory Honda OE parts to convert.

5. Can you trike the F6B? While there isn't currently a kit available, we will work with California Sidecar to develop the kit. It's a Gold Wing so there is no reason that it won't work.
Red F6B with a passenger. There is a TON of interest in this bike from Harley Davidson Road Glide and Street Glide owners to metric cruiser owners wanting to know about it. We are trying to find out all that we can so we know what needs to be done as soon as the bike hits. One thing is for sure, we will have the best and lowest price on them with no fees, great financing options and an unbeatable selection in stock. If we don't have the Honda you are looking for, we can get it. We are Southern Honda and there is a reason we have been the #1 selling Gold Wing dealer since 2004. We love our GL1800!

AMA Supercross Round #5 Anaheim from Southern Honda

Round #5 Anaheim 3 from Angels Stadium
Angel's Stadium, Anaheim 3
Another round and another winner this week as Ryan Dungey goes from the worst night ever to the best night. Once again we were following the 3rd Anaheim round closely here at Southern Honda and were hoping to see Team Muscle Milk and Team Geico Honda finish consistently and at or near the front. Qualifying started well in the 250 Supercross class with Geico Honda rider Eli Tomac laying down the fastest lap on his 2013 Honda CRF250R. His luck continued in his heat race where he dominated the field and easily moved on to the main event. Tomac's luck did not continue as he got off to a bad start.
Eli Tomac on his 2013 CRF250R available from Southern Honda Powersports
Eli Tomac riding hard to catch up to Roczen.
Here is a play by play of what happened:

Time for the 250 West SX Main Event. 15 laps. Joey Savatgy leads Kenny Roczen and Martin Davalos out of the gate!
Not for long though. Ken Roczen goes into first quickly. Martin Davalos moves to second. Savatgy third. Travis Baker is next, followed by Zach Osborne. Eli Tomac is eighth.

At the end of lap five, Roczen is riding just like he’s done when he won the MX2 World Championship. Strong. Aggressive. Smooth. Stylish. And fast. Martin Davalos is running well in second. Although a ways back, Joey Savatgy in third. Eli Tomac has moved up to fourth.

Lap ten: Roczen leading, but Davalos is hanging tough. Eli Tomac is third – a good distance back.
Fourth is Kyle Cunningham, then Travis Baker, Zach Osborne, and Joey Savatgy. Jason Anderson is next. Cole Seely is having a tough ride in 12th.

Ken Roczen has won.

That puts Eli Tomac down 20 points to the Red Bull KTM rider with 4 races to go.

250 West Main Event Results:
  1. Ken Roczen – KTM
  2. Martin Davalos – KAW

The 450 Supercross class again was full of ups and downs for our team Honda riders. Canard, Reed and Barcia all qualified right next to each other. In heat 1 Barcia chased Davi Millsaps all race and ended up 2nd place in his heat. Trey Canard was in heat 2 with some of the big hitters but still managed a 4th place.  Then came the main event. Another pileup took out Honda rider Chad Reed once again. Barcia ripped it and stayed with the lead group on his 2013 Honda CRF450R. Here is the play by play:

Time for the 450 SX Main Event. 20 laps. It’s barely noticeable … but there is a slight mist failing. Not enough to be considered rain. But maybe enough to mist up riders’ goggles quicker than normal. It’s not affecting the track at all.

It’s Mike Alessi with the holeshot! Ryan Dungey is second! Then Trey Canard and Davi Millsaps. James Stewart follows. Then Barcia. Those top six are close.

Towards the end of the second lap, Mike Alessi goes down. Ryan Dungey is leading. He’s now chased by Davi Millsaps. And James Stewart! Barcia is next, then Canard. Villopoto is ninth. Reed is 11th.
Justin Barcia watches a heat race.
Just Barcia watching a Heat Race.

Lap four – Millsaps is hounding Dungey. Stewart right behind. Great race.

Running order at the end of lap five – Dungey, Millsaps, Stewart, Barcia, Andrew Short, Broc Tickle, Chad Reed, Matt Goerke, Kyle Chisholm, Trey Canard … where is Ryan Villopoto? Villopoto has dropped to 16th.

Lap 7 – on a tight left hand corner, Stewart goes inside and passes Millsaps for second. Dungey leads, Stewart now second, then Millsaps.

Halfway point – lap ten. Dungey is starting to pull away. He’s on his way to his first Main Event win of the season. Had to go thru an LCQ to do it. And if he wins, it would make a KTM sweep combined with Roczen’s win in the 250′s.

Running order – Dungey, Stewart, Millsaps, Barcia, Short, Chad Reed, Tickle, Canard, Matt Goerke, Kyle Chisholm, Justin Brayton, and Ryan Villopoto 12th out of 20 riders.
Lap 14. Davi Millsaps passes James Stewart to take back second place! Dungey leads, Millsaps second, Stewart third, Barcia fourth, and Chad Reed is fifth. Trey Canard eighth. Ryan Villopoto ninth.
Barcia battles past Stewart!
Ryan Dungey has won this race. Barcia pulls out a podium spot with a 3rd.
